Welcome! Welcome! I am a registered dietitian (RD) and health communications writer based in New York City.
This blog began in 2009 when I went back to school to get my Masters in nutrition. It was created to act as a space for thoughts, observations, and other events and issues I encountered during my course of study.
One of my favorite things about working in nutrition is that it allows me to use both sides of my brain to make connections between the mind and body using diet as a link. When you’re well fed and feeling good, everything works better. Eating well doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful, and my goal is to help people prove it to themselves.
Though I know what it’s like to wish for more hours in a day, I believe in making time for yourself to actually sit down and enjoy a meal. I try to keep it as real as possible—no weird diet products, no impossible-to-find ingredients. I do not have a bread maker or a standing mixer. Maybe one day.
Though my training has been very clinical, I maintain a healthy respect for the as-yet-unproved— Keeping up on new developments is one of my top priorities.
I have also written for The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics‘ Food and Nutrition Magazine and the Greater New York Dietetic Association, among other organizations. I have been a regular contributor at websites such as Organic Wine Journal and FYI Living. You can also find me on an iPad application called Trufflehead!
Feel free to email me at keepingitrealfood(at) gmail.com.
Cheers!

Hey Jess!
Found you on Foodpress with that oatmeal! I make almost an identical oatmeal, carrots and all. Yum! I’m a dietitian as well. Where are you studying for your MS? Small world! Great site, happy cooking!
Hi Jess! I just found your blog a minute ago, and I’m excited to read more! I especially appreciate your openness towards new ideas, I believe they have to be given a real chance, even if they’re still considered “unscientific”. Every scientific theory has once started as a hypothesis.
… and still is, actually.
Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment, Kath!

I love your stance on food…it sounds very similar to mine! No fake ingredients and I sit down for 99% of my meals.
Great blog! I look forward to reading more.
Love your blog, glad I found it. I am a big advocate for a real food, this we have in common.
Nice to meet you
Hi Jess! I just stumbled across your blog and felt the need to say hello! I’m also a Dietetic Intern this year, I actually havent started rotations yet (2 weeks til foodservice management) so I’m just in the beginning! When did you start yours and how are you liking it??
Hi! First time visiting your blog. I’m currently back in school to follow my passion of nutrition and eventually become an RD. I love how you are all for promoting real food & especially love your “respect for the as-yet-unproved”… I think that’s important. It seems too many Dietitians are too old-school & rigid with their thoughts… I don’t want to be one of those. I think more free-thinking would be helpful & can help more people…
Thanks for stopping by, Karey, and congrats on going back to school to follow your dream! When I was first deciding whether to get on the RD track, I realized it was important to me to get a solid clinical background as a jumping off point, if nothing else. It’s pretty exciting that there are so many things you can do as an RD today!
Hello! I just came upon your blog…I am currently in the middle of the DICAS application process! I am so confused on where to go for internship. Where are you completing your internship??
Hi, I love following your blog so I nominated you for a Leibster Blog Award! It’s easy and fun so hopefully you’ll enjoy it
