Marathon Fuel

After a few social weekends, I stayed close to home Saturday to get some work done. I had a few exciting projects that needed my attention, so after an early hot yoga class, I  settled in for a productive day.

Breakfast: pumpkin-flax oats in a nearly-empty peanut butter jar

Fueling your brain and body for a marathon work session (especially after a workout) with balanced meals is important. Luckily, I had a lot of pre-prepped ingredients and leftovers on hand to keep me going without cutting into my time too much.

A mix of proteins, carbs and healthy fats keep you satisfied and energized, and adding fiber-rich fruits and vegetables help keep you full longer so you can stay in the zone. I don’t know about you, but nothing frustrates me like a grumbling stomach when I’m trying to work!

Spaghetti squash with tons of leftover veggies, kale, peas & parmesan—whatever works

Lazy-person's shakshouka

I did go out on Friday night to see Pina with a few friends who had been wanting to check it out. If you haven’t seen it, it’s wonderful. I’m not normally someone who gets into movies about dancing, but it’s so engaging and truly beautiful to watch. After getting a lot done today, it looks like Saturday may involve an outing after all, at least for a little while. Tomorrow’s another busy day!

What are you up to this weekend? What do you eat when you need to work for a long time?

Scenes from the weekend

This weekend has been a really nice one. I got to see a lot of favorite faces and also had a chance to unwind a little.

Some highlights included homemade stir-fry in Brooklyn…

Don't worry mom—still not a smoker!

Leisurely breakfasts…

Birthday celebrations…

What did you do this weekend?

RD-Style Karaoke

So last night, I went out with some friends from my nutrition program. BYOB karaoke was on the agenda for the night, and it was a blast! I can’t help but be amused that a bunch of RDs-in-training showed up with various kinds of wine (mostly red—Lambrusco was my contribution), a huge jug of water, and dark chocolate-covered almonds, but that’s just how we roll.

Do you have a favorite karaoke song? I tend to go for the Rolling Stones. “Let’s Spend the Night Together” and “Time is on My Side” happened last night, as did Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” which is fun with big groups. I should probably claim responsibility for Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” and the Pixies’ “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” but let’s just keep that between us, k?

I really suck at going out sometimes because even if I don’t go to bed until 2 or 3, I’m still up at 8, like, clockwork. This morning was no exception. I barely drank any alcohol last night, but I have that foggy, sleepy thing going on. At least there’s plenty of time for a nap before my friend Dave’s show later tonight! This is also going to take quite a bit of coffee…

I have a butternut squash mac & cheese recipe coming your way tomorrow. I hope you like it : )

Do you like karaoke? What are your favorite songs to sing? What are you up to on this Sunday?

Would you try the “Dark Vader” burger?

My friend Alex sent me this yesterday, and I almost spit out my morning coffee laughing. Starting in March, Belgian fast food chain Quick will be offering three Phantom Menace-themed burgers in anticipation of another Star Wars re-release.

While disgusted, I’m also terribly amused. I get a kick out of the black “Dark Vader” bun and odd marshmallow-looking bits on the Jedi burger, but I don’t know, I just think these are too freaking bizarre to eat.

Would you try one of these? Any favorite—or least favorite—promotional foods?

What I Ate Wednesday #38

Wow, busy day! Luckily, it was all good stuff—since getting back to NYC on Tuesday, I’ve been taking care of a bunch of to-do list items. This time of year is a little slow for work since a lot of people go on vacation, so I’m taking advantage of the extra time to relax and organize and clean. There’s a lot coming up in 2012, and I want to be ready!

I also made time today to have lunch with a dear friend and also to get my physical for my internship. I felt like I was on my feet all day, but it felt good to get so much done and to catch up with someone I don’t get to see that often.

I’m happy I’m feeling almost all better from last week’s cold. Having the energy to do stuff is nice. I never appreciate good health as much as I do after being sick. So cheers!

Because I was so busy and in constant motion, I found I was really hungry all day. Good thing I had lot soy good food to keep me going…

Breakfast: Oats with pear, chia seeds, spices and peanut butter

Lunch: Egg white spinach & feta omelet, (unpictured) wheat toast and tomato juice on the side

Dinner: Roasted eggplant lentil soup with goat cheese; kale salad with roasted cauliflower and toast with hummus

Snack: Frozen waffle topped with a little PB and a plum (chopped & microwaved 3 minutes)—random but quelled the hunger beast

What was the best thing you ate this Wednesday?

Study Breaks

In addition to it being the holiday season, it also happens to be finals season for us students. On Monday, I have my last final (Advanced Nutritional Biochem—Proteins, Fats & Carbs) of the semester. I’ve been in grad school for almost 3 years with no breaks, so I’m nearing that burnout “who cares about amino acid metabolism” place.

To fuel these oh-so-exciting study sessions, I’ve been making sure to eat balanced meals while still making a little time for social activities, like catching up over drinks at Leah’s the other day. Today I have plans to see some of my lady friends. And yes, that’s champagne in that mug…

I’ve also been making time for exercise and yoga to balance out the, um, mugs of champagne. Cleaning also seems to be a good study break. My apartment is freaking sparkling right now.

Since my internship doesn’t start until late February, I am looking forward to two glorious months off from school. I still have to work, but I will take that over work plus papers and exams any day!

It’s kind of crazy to think that this time next week, it’ll be Christmas Eve. I think I’m ready…

Swizz Manhattan

Rather than throw a birthday party in my apartment this year, last Saturday night, I met up with some of my best lady friends for dinner and a little ridiculous  karaoke fun. We went to Swizz manhattan, a fondue restaurant in Hells Kitchen. I hadn’t been there in years but had really liked it and thought it would be fun.

set-up

The service was great, and the food was delicious. I’m not normally a cheese fanatic, but it was the perfect thing for a chilly New York night. Between the five of us, we shared two fondues—the traditional and the gorgonzola.

Wine and entrees also happened (salads with shrimp, grilled salmon, butternut ravioli and chicken cordon bleu were all enjoyed), but I was too busy catching up and eating to bother with photographs.

Had we not had karaoke plans we might have stayed for dessert because it doesn’t get much better than melted dark chocolate, but hey—at least now we have a reason to back, right?

This was one of my favorite birthday celebrations I’ve had in years. Sometimes a night out with the girls is exactly what the doctor ordered. That and the much-needed green juice the next day. I must be getting old—a little wine goes a lot much farther than it used to…

Have you ever eaten fondue? What’s your favorite kind? How did you celebrate your birthday this year?

Cafe Amici

There are a lot of sagittarians in my life, so this time of year is dotted with birthday gatherings and celebrations. Last week while I was in New Jersey, I met up with my friend Liz, who was born exactly one week before me, and her hilarious roommates for dinner at a restaurant called Cafe Amici.

Liz and I met in the seventh grade, when we were lab partners. We’ve been friends ever since—I love her no-nonsense approach to life and get a kick out of her nursing horror stories. I’m embarrassed to admit this is the only picture I have of us. I think it’s from some Hawaiian Troubador-themed 8th grade graduation party I don’t remember at all, as I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out and was barely getting by thanks to pain killers. 14 was not a good year for the roses.

There's me & Liz, on the left

We don’t catch up as much as we’d like, but it was fun to meet up in the motherland for a change over good food. After much debate, I ordered a filet of sole special which came with potato ravioli and spinach, plus salad to start.

It was awesome. I’ll have to remember this place next time I’m in the area and looking for something a step or two above a diner. It was great to catch up with the girls and celebrate Liz’s 26th birthday with a ton of laughs and good food.

When you go visit your family, are there any restaurants you like to go to?

L’Allegria

Good morning from chilly New York City! I finally turned on the heat yesterday. It officially feels like November now.

Last night, I met friends for dinner in Hells Kitchen. Italian was on the menu, so we walked into L’Allegria on Ninth Avenue, where I’d never been before. One thing I love about my neighborhood is how any restaurants there are—I’ve lived here almost 4 years and there’s still plenty I haven’t tried.

It was kind of the perfect thing for a mellow Thursday night. It’s hard for me to say no to half-off bottles of wine and good company—we shared a bottle of Sangiovese (one of my favorites). I may have had half a glass too much, but hey, life is short. And I have plenty of time to rehydrate today.

I ordered a salmon dish which came with sautéed spinach, frisee salad and roasted potatoes. The salmon itself was covered in some kind of potato crust, kind of like a potato pancake.

The portions were huge at this place—after I’d eaten enough to feel satisfied, it looked like I’d barely made a dent. Except for the spinach. I could probably eat garlicky spinach every day for the rest of my life and not get sick of it.

Somehow, we spent almost 3 hours in this place. Haha part of that involved Anders’ search for his wedding ring. To put it in his words, he learned that, “yes, he will unscrew pipes in public restrooms if he thinks his wedding ring’s down there.” Carrie obviously found it very romantic, which it was, especially in context. The ring was under the table, luckily.

I spent the rest of the night working on Biochem review for Monday’s exam. Sometimes wine makes me sleepy, and sometimes it makes me quite the opposite. I covered a lot of ground, but I have this feeling I’m already f*cked for the test. Carbohydrate metabolism I can wrap my head around, no problem, but for whatever reason, even when I’m not going through major life changes (more on that at a later date), lipids are hard for me to understand.

Anyway, I’ll spare you the rambling. If you need me I’ll be at my desk writing about reactive oxygen species and alternating between coffee and water.

What are you up to this weekend? Any good restaurant meals lately?

Part of a Complete Breakfast

So yesterday I went to get my tooth fixed—genius here lost a filling on Wednesday and had to get it refilled. Good times. Despite post-novocain numbness, I managed to have a pretty productive afternoon.

Around 5:30 my friend Mike of Milo/Snap Photography came over to do a food photography shoot for an article I’m writing. We had a lot of fun playing around with colors, light and texture. The finished product is going to look something like this, only nicer because it was taken with a real camera and lots of care went into the angles and light.

The vibe is a little bit “Part of a Complete Breakfast,” which cracks me up.

Now I’m thinking of that Velvet Underground song “Beginning to See the Light” and the line that goes, “Wine in the morning’, and some breakfast at night…”

Not that I’ve ever done that, of course ; )

What do you think of when you think of “a complete breakfast?”
