What I Ate Wednesday #107: Sunday Funday

Yikes. I just said “Sunday Funday.” Who am I? Someone who occasionally uses “Sunday Funday” as a blog post title, I suppose. Anyway, though I’ve been tying up a lot of loose ends and getting ready for some big changes that come with a new schedule, I’ve been trying to make the most of my last few weeks being able to set my own hours and declare weeknights honorary Saturdays.

Obviously, by now it is Wednesday again… and time for another What I Ate Wednesday.  As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

Last Sunday was one of those “clean out the fridge” and get stuff done days. I put in a lot of work during the daytime so I could go see a late movie. Was anyone else not really scared by The Shining? I don’t know how I’d gone so long without seeing it, but I’m glad I finally got to cross that off the list. It was also nice to be able to go out for a bite after the film instead of going right home. Sure, I was tired the next day because my crazy morning people genes woke me up bright & early despite an eye mask, but hey.

  • Breakfast: Green pancakes
  • Lunch: Giant salad, toast with hummus & eggplant
  • Snack: yogurt with cereal and berries
  • Dinner: hummus, goat cheese, & veggie quesadilla, more salad( need to use up those greens)
  • Snack/2nd Dinner: (unpictured) Vegetable dumpling soup at 1 a.m.—why not?

What was the last movie you saw in theaters? Last late-night bite?

What I Ate Wednesday #105: Food Photo “Rules”

Good morning and happy Wednesday! This week is going crazy-fast for me, but I’ve been enjoying the nice weather we’re finally having here in the northeast, even if it’s going back into the 50′s later this week. So let’s do this What I Ate Wednesday thing, shall we? As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

So far this week, I haven’t been photographing much, mostly because I’ve either been too busy to remember or not in the mood to interrupt a conversation with an iPhone camera or because I’ve been with people who don’t really know about the blog. I don’t like to be “that girl who takes pictures of all her food,” you know?  I’m curious—do any of you bloggers out there have any particular rules about food photos when you’re with others?

Though I’m exaggerating when I liken having a food blog to having kids or a dog, you do have to say at point, “Hey, I have this thing that’s part of my life, and I need to do things for it—are you cool being around that sometimes?”  Or like, “Hey, I need to go walk my blog—want to come with?”

It’s more than just being seen as “weird,” though. For example, what if someone reads into an implied intimacy because you show off a meal you enjoyed with them online? It’s a very subtle but powerful signal we bloggers use, often without even realizing it. Since the nature of sharing meals is an intimate act in and of itself (think way back to caveman days—you didn’t share your fire or meat with your enemies), posting those things for the world to see is a way of saying, “Look at these intimate things we’re doing together.” Even if the dining company isn’t fully conscious of this, it definitely alters the dynamic. It’s somewhat akin to saying, “Do you want to come back to my place?”

I’ve had to teach myself to really tune in to my gut feeling about someone before I whip out my phone or camera. I’ve also noticed that my desire to share photos of meals I enjoy with someone—or lack there of–says a lot about my feelings for that person. I actually once realized I needed to stop seeing someone because I was terrified that if I posted about meals I’d had with them, they’d start acting like they “owned” me. On the flip side, I’ve gone out with people (though very, very few) with whom I’ve had to keep myself from taking a photo on the first date.

Haha anyway, I’m just rambling. Whether it’s new friends, new more-than-friends, or new co-workers, I often wonder how best to approach it once I’ve gotten comfortable enough to do so. I find What I Ate Wednesday is actually the easiest ice-breaker because I can just explain, “Yeah, I do this fun weekly link-up…so that’s why I’m photographing my lunch tray/cocktail/dinner.”

Speaking of What I Ate Wednesday, let’s get to the what-I-ate part. Here’s what I enjoyed on Sunday.

  • Breakfast: Apple-spice oats with sunflower butter & bee pollen.
  • Lunch: Poached eggs with avocado, mushrooms, and tomato, English muffin on the side
  • Snack: (unpictured) Hummus, crackers, and olives during a wine-tasting
  • Dinner: Steak with mango-cilantro salsa; side salad
  • Snack: (unpictured) seaweed, cucumber salad

So I’m curious—do you have any food photo “rules?” What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently?

Smonday

Happy Monday—how’s it going? Pardon yesterday’s radio silence. I spent a lot of time this weekend out enjoying the city: among other things, there was oyster happy hourbrunch, wandering around Chelsea Market, a wine-tasting class, dinner, and a movie.

Sometimes I complain about working from home and “having” to set my own schedule, but I’m truly grateful for days I can say yes to things and enjoy a Sunday-like Monday. After enjoying a late breakfast outside in the sun (without a sweater or jacket!), I’d definitely say this one is off to a good start. It’s back to the grind tomorrow, so I’m thankful to be enjoying such a nice day.

What was the highlight of your weekend? What are you looking forward to this week?

Happy Easter

Scary but probably delicious. Prediabetes, anyone?

New York Weekend

Sometimes I have really mellow weekends, and other times, I have super-busy weekends. This past weekend fell into the latter category. I got to spend a lot of time out and about with  some of my favorite people—a friend was visiting and my sister and I finally managed to find some time to hang out.

Highlights involved a group dinner at Hearth Friday night, drinks with friends and then a jazz show Saturday night (followed by late-night girl-talk over tea at Starbucks until they kicked us out to close, and then lots of outside time on Sunday. After a stop for Indian food, my sister and I checked out the Coffee & Tea Festival and spent the rest of the afternoon shopping, walking around, and catching up.

It was one of those perfect New York City kind of weekends, and I’m grateful I got to take a little break and have some fun and some good conversations. It was restorative in a way I didn’t even know I needed, but I feel a lot better equipped to face the week.

What were your weekend highlights?

Springing ahead for real

Technically, anyway. It’s still a tad blustery in NYC, but spring just happened, so cheers to that…I may or may not have wandered into the makeup aisle when I went to stock up on allergy meds yesterday. Nothing like a seasonal impulse buy. I wish my insurance covered pick-me-ups like lip-stain. IMG_1926

These boots are worn the f*** out

Even if the temperatures suck, the lighting situation is definitely improved. I love that it’s so much brighter out. While out running errands, I spied a few budding plants. Signs of life!

The start of a new season seems like a good time to check in with those new years resolutions and see which ones are worth keeping with, which ones to chuck, and which ones to get started on already. It’s also a good time to see if there’s anything you need to focus on that didn’t occur to you in January. Not that January 1st is the only time to make resolutions, but since so many of us do, it’s a good jumping-off point.  Continue reading

What I Ate Wednesday #102

…and suddenly it’s Wednesday again—aka What I Ate Wednesday. As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting  the weekly link party. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

In keeping with this month’s green theme, this post contains a lot of chlorophyl. I’m still trying to make mostly things to use up random canned goods & such, but Sunday I had plans with my mom, which was really nice.

WHOA-OH OH—I just remembered that today is the spring equinox. I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for spring weather to freaking get here already. I’m getting to that breaking point where I listen way too much to the Postal Service for my own good (especially this “new” song I just heard for the first time last weekend) and make big little life decisions in between headaches. I’m sure there’s a planetary scapegoat I could pin this on, but I think I’ll just stick with a lingering case of the winter-blahs. These dim photos are bumming me out.

Breakfast: Chocolate oatmeal with egg whites (and canned pumpkin mixed in), topped with the other half of the banana I used to cook the oats.

Lunch: Grilled branzino with broccolini, roasted potatoes, and brussels sprouts; an unpictured glass of champagne that came with my “brunch.” Weird pairing, but hey, why not?

Snack: (unpictured) post-workout cottage cheese with blueberries and a crumbled graham cracker

Dinner: Salad with leftover roasted eggplant & pepper, chickpeas, and feta; olive foccacia from the flea market.

Snack: Sliced apple with dip/fluff made from PB2, cocoa powder, and more pumpkin—no way to make it sound good, but it tasted great with the tart apple.

Here’s to better & brighter—Happy Spring!

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently? What are you looking forward to this spring?

Wearing o’ the Orange

Happy Monday! Did you have a good weekend? From the looks of Facebook and Twitter, I gather many folks wore o’ the green and all that other St. Patrick’s Day stuff.

I spent Sunday hanging with my mom, and as we walked down the street flanked by a family in shades of Emerald, she looked at her orange scarf and said, “I accidentally wore the opposite color you’re supposed to wear—I hope no one minds!” Like someone would be legitimately offended.

“No one will be mad at you for wearing orange on St. Patrick’s Day!” I said. “Besides, it’s not like either of us is all that Irish.” I was wearing an orange scarf too, and no, we hadn’t planned to coordinate.

“Actually…”

Ancestry is a funny thing. So first there was that time I found out my Greek family is actually sort of Turkish (?) by way of border changes, and yesterday I got to hear the story of how I’m not really related to my Scottish (so-called) ancestors by blood, as my great-grandma’s biological father was some Irish guy passing through town (whether he was a soldier or a sailor or some other sort of transient gent is unclear).

So anyway, guess I’m a little more Irish than I thought. That still doesn’t mean I did anything to mark the day. After yoga plans fell through due to a funny miscommunication about it being a prenatal class (still not really sure what the deal was), we spent some time walking around, eventually making our way to a flea market. IMG_1909 After wandering about in the cold trying to decide what to get for lunch, we made our way to Ocean Grill. Whenever my mom and I get together, one or both of us seems to be craving fish—me because I don’t make it for myself that often, and her for, well, the same reason, as my dad won’t eat it. This time, we were both in the mood for it. I went with the grilled branzino, and we split a side of brussels sprouts. I didn’t get a picture, but they came with a little “ALLERGY” flag because we told them tree-nuts were on the no-fly list. That always embarrasses me, but better safe than struggling to breathe. IMG_1911

We’ve also decided make a tradition of getting our nails done at this one place we’ve gone to a few times. Not only do they give great manicures, they also do amazing massages while you get your nails done. Totally worth the extra few bucks. If you couldn’t tell from other recent posts, I’m a sucker for a good massage—why bribe myself with, like, shoes, when I can have that instead? IMG_1913

So yeah. My shoulders are only very tight instead of impossibly tight today and my nails are a bright shade of gold. I tried to get some work done on a research project about breakfast intake, but instead, I wasted a few hours learning this song on the ukulele because sometimes, well, it’s more important to play obscure old Elvis Costello songs over and over than to do work that you will probably have to do over later anyway. All to keep from losing one’s mind…

Did you do anything for St. Patrick’s Day? How do you keep from losing your  mind?

Soda Ban Drama

Surprise, surprise—Big Soda is none too pleased about Bloomberg’s soda ban here in NYC. In fact, the ban was banned the day it was supposed to take effect. Bloomberg says that city will appeal the overruling, but good grief—what a drama.

Of all the coverage of the topic I’ve been reading over recent months, I’ve been getting the most out of Marion Nestle’s blog Food Politics. She just cuts right to the chase and has a way of letting facts speak for themselves…

As someone who puts sugar-sweetened beverages on par with cigarettes, I’d love to see people drink less soda. I think there are many, many ways this could be encouraged. Though I understand the criticisms and misgivings, at the end of the day, I happen to support some of the more drastic measures others prickle at. However, it’s not going to be an overnight or even peaceful process.

So I suppose we shall see. It occurs to me that I haven’t asked my dad, who will probably be buried with a glass bottle of coke, what he thinks of the ban. Maybe next time instead of nagging him about his hypothetical impending foot amputation, I should, you know, start a real conversation.

Weekend Things

Happy Sunday, guys. Hope you’re enjoying a lovely weekend. I was feeling a little under the weather on Saturday, but I’m convinced there are few things 10 hours of sleep can’t fix. The fog and low-grade fever are gone and the sun even came out a little Sunday morning.

Friday I went to hear some live music in Astoria and had dinner at 5 Napkin Burger beforehand. I think my body might be trying to readjust after pulling one of those “I’m just gonna lose a few pounds because I can” the way it does whenever I go through a major life change—it would be silly for me to discount the end of the internship as a big deal. I ate every bit of my meal (which would normally fill me up) and then was hungry again an hour later.

Saturday I was feeling crappy so I laid low. Basically the only reason I left the apartment was to go check out a reflexology place near me. Holy s*** it was amazing. It hurt so good it kind of tickled. I was in bed by 10 pm after giving the first couple episodes of Downton Abbey a try on Amazon Prime free streaming. I think I get what all the fuss is about, but not sure I’ll stick with it.

This morning I woke up feeling a lot better, though I’m kind of impressed by my own under-eye circles. I also spilled boiling water on my hand making tea but was fine. Hey, whatever works. I did some good stretching and then when to pick up a baguette, brie, and Bordeaux for an Oscars party tonight. I’ve never been to one, since I’ve always had to get up at the ass-crack of dawn on Monday, so I’m looking forward to having a good time.

What have you been up to this weekend? Have you ever been to an Oscars party?
