So yeah…can we talk about the humidity we’ve been having this week? And this is a considerably tame example…
That is all.
Do you have crazy hair days?
A conversation at work yesterday reminded me that this time last year, I was a devoted tea drinker. It wasn’t until this fall, when I got my first coffee maker in years, that I got back into the morning coffee habit. Unfortunately, my body reacts a little differently to it now than it did when I was in my early twenties.
Yesterday I had one of those “click” moments when being made aware of how much tension I really do store in my upper back. How did that get there?
With tomorrow’s solar eclipse already working its magic, it feels like the right time to make a change, however small. So starting with today, I’m going back to drinking green tea in the morning. I think I’ll like it. I certainly didn’t miss the black-coffee jitters before, and I don’t think I’ll miss them now.
So yeah. When I spoke a few weeks ago about 2012 being the beginning of that “whole other ball game,” I didn’t even realize how true that was going to turn out to be. Long story short, it’s all good. For right now, I’m just relaxed and paying attention.
How does caffeine affect you? Do you prefer tea or coffee?

Happy Tuesday. Hope your week is off to a good start. Me, I’m just getting Day 2 of this Med/Surg party started.
Last night, I came home starving after an event, and remembered I had a bunch of random leftover baking experiments in my freezer. A mini chocolate red wine cake found new life as an addition to plain yogurt & cocoa powder.
I feel like I’ve been talking a lot about alcohol on this blog lately, which is funny, given that I haven’t been drinking any more or less than I normally do (3-5 a week is pretty typical). I think I’m just less shy about it now.
So cheers—to a new week, a new rotation, and new life.
Happy Saturday, y’all (not sure what’s up with the ‘y’all,’ but hey…). How’s your weekend going so far? Any fun plans? I spent last night doing karaoke, and this morning, I went to a hot yoga class. I’m just settling in for an afternoon of work.
A gal doing a 40-hour-a-week unpaid dietetic internship still needs to keep the lights on. If you’re thinking it’s strange that one needs to “work for free” to become an RD, you’re not alone, but save for a few exceptions, that’s just how it is. And if you’re wondering what the hell a dietetic internship is, anyway, you can read a little more at the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics’ website.
Though I really enjoyed a lot of things about my Behavioral Health rotation, I’m glad to be moving on to General Med/Surgery. Nutritionally speaking, you see more challenging cases in the acute care setting, and I’m looking forward to getting more practice. I’d also be lying if I said the shorter commute wasn’t a factor. Still, I’ll miss some of the “you don’t hear that every day”ness.
At some point over the weekend, I’m planning to make some food to get me through the week—roasted veggies, perhaps a batch of seitan, and I need to figure out what to do with these little potatoes…
Any suggestions? What are you cooking this weekend?

It’s been gorgeous in NYC this weekend, and I’ve enjoyed the chance to recharge my batteries and spend time outside.
Saturday morning, I did an easy workout (aka-used the elliptical machine as an excuse to read fiction) and then had breakfast while reading the paper.
After getting my hair cut (finally)…
I rambled around Central Park. It was quite the people-watching excursion. Clearly, I wasn’t the only one seeking some green space.
I found a few more excuses to get outside, but eventually came in to paint my nails and experiment with a new veggie burger recipe. I worked loosely off this recipe from Mama Pea, but I worked the food processor a little too hard. So I poured the too-thin batter into into a muffin tin. What the hell? White bean burger muffin things could work…
And they did, quite well. Seriously, why do I not use basil more often in things? I had one of the muffin burger things (I have no idea what to call them) with whole wheat pita, hummus, roasted brussels sprouts, and salad in miso-tahini dressing for dinner.
While looking for a line, I opened up my copy of Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem and found a dollar bill (with extra “0″s drawn on after the 1) I’d taped inside the front cover some years ago. My younger self really cracks me up sometimes. Gotta love the positive thinking, though I wish I could remember why I chose that book. I’m glad, at least, that I didn’t put my money on/in, say, Bukowski’s Love is a Dog from Hell.
How’s your weekend been? Do anything fun?
Okay, so this post has nothing to do with the 2007 Spoon album, but I’m having one of those weeks where by the end of the day, the only language I’m capable of comes out all Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Holy crap. I booked myself a massage for next week (something to look forward to—hah, more Spoon), packed a nice lunch for today, and am looking forward to a good weekend with family and friends.
The calendar tells me it’s getting to be that time again…No wonder I’m in a murderous state, if exhausted. Thank god Easter usually involves lots of chocolate! I’m need of a fix. Or many.
What are you looking forward to right now?

So-hoooo…Yesterday I was that intern who passed out in a patient’s room. I like to think of myself as someone with a strong stomach, but that’s without adjusting for lack of sleep, a new schedule and emotions. Whoops. Let’s just say I now know what my clinical specialty will probably not be.
Fortunately, if you’re gonna pass out at work, the place to do it is a hospital. Within seconds, there were 5 people who knew exactly what to do hovering over me. It’s kind of ironic that I stayed up late Tuesday night working on an article about juice, only to end up having to drink a bunch of OJ and apple juice while getting my blood pressure taken and finger pricked. As a precaution, I was taken to the ER, but within an hour I was on my way home—in my mom’s car.
Yes, I am 26 years old, but I really appreciated my mom coming from work to get me. After we stopped for something to eat, she picked me up a bunch of snacks to keep in my lab coat pocket and locker for those shaky moments because she read Wednesday’s blog post and knows how I get when I need to eat, which is pretty often. She’s adorable—and she has good taste. I totally didn’t think that snacks would be something I’d have to think about in my internship, but hey, what’s life without surprises?
Every few years I have some kind of episode like that, and the perfect storm leading up to it always looks pretty similar in hindsight. I’m a little embarrassed, but mostly thankful I landed with “a soft thud” (as I was told) and not on my head and I’m happy to be feeling pretty much back to my old self this morning. Still, I’m gonna keep taking it a little easier for a few more days.
At least it’s a good story…
Have you ever passed out at work—or anywhere else? I want to hear your stories!

This was one of those perfect weekends, complete with good company, good food, and good weather. I also found a new favorite brunch spot to add to the list.
What did you do this weekend?
This has basically nothing to do with food, except for the fact that it mentions eggs, but I was recently reminded of the ending from Annie Hall and wanted to share because it’s so funny and bittersweet and true. Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t seen it just watch the whole thing and come back. It really is one of the best movies ever.
Hope you’re having a lovely weekend! What are you up to?
