Thanks for the coupons, but…

Perhaps I’m a little bit paranoid after reading this article in the New York Times Magazine last weekend, but I have to wonder what suddenly made the Whole Foods I’ve been shopping at for four years start thinking I’m feeding a family. Is it that I started buying organic milk this year?

Thanks for the coupons, Whole Foods, but please don’t rush me.

I don’t even know what to make of the Victoria’s Secret catalog I got recently that was addressed to the Cording Family. It must be the lacy stuff I ordered when it was on sale back in November…Ew. Now I’m a little creeped out. Time to stop thinking about it.

Do you ever get weird coupons?

What I Ate Wednesday #46

Good morning! How’s your week going? Did you celebrate Mardi Gras?  I think the last time I did was in middle school French class! It’s also been a while since I’ve made any morning-after Lenten-type vows, except maybe that one time in 2008 I thought about giving up alcohol, but let’s never speak of that one again, k? Still, kudos to you if you’re spending the next 40 days trying out a new good habit, whether it’s for religious reasons or just because now seems like a good time. With so many huge changes in the works, I think my goal for the next 6 weeks is to not freak the f*** out, which will hopefully benefit those around me.

Wednesday totally snuck up on me this week, thanks to the long weekend. No complaints, though. Yesterday was my last Tuesday working from home in who knows how long, so I took advantage of the extra time by doing a ton of laundry, stocking up on groceries, and cleaning the hell out of my apartment. I also ran a bunch of errands I’d been putting off.

Because I felt like I was constantly moving, my meals and snacks were mostly quick, thrown-together assortments of leftovers. Sometimes I forget just how much of a workout you get cleaning and rushing around crossing things off your to-do list. So much for that active rest day. I’ll make it up later this week…

In the spirit of What I Ate Wednesday, let’s do this thing.

Breakfast: Oats with plum and chia seeds, topped with fig butter and PB2 sauce (I’ve been won over—this stuff is kinda neat)

Lunch: Butternut black bean chili over kale; toast w/ hummus & roasted pepper

Snack: Kefir w/ berries & cereal

Dinner: Spaghetti squash  w/ roasted broccoli & eggplant, kale, Tofurkey sausage, marinara, and parmesan

Snack: (unpictured) glass of white wine at writers’ group; banana w/ 1 tsp-ish of Biscoff when I got home (I tell myself the potassium will counteract the onset of a wine headache, but this may or may not be true)

As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting the link party. For more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

Did you do anything for Mardi Gras? Giving anything up for the next 40 days?

Long Weekend Things

Good morning and happy Sunday. How’s your weekend going? I’m heading up to Cambridge for the night to see A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer. I actually really like taking the bus by myself, especially if it’s a nice day, and I’m looking forward to getting some work done on the trip. Last night, I made some overnight oats, so breakfast was ready and waiting when I got back from the gym. Me being me, I also have lunch packed.

The rest of my weekend has been full of fun New York things. Friday I met some friends at the Brooklyn Brewery, which I’d been meaning to visit for ages. I was especially taken with the maple porter.

Some of the people in our group were taken with the cat wandering around.

"Holy shit! It's a cat! In a bar!"

I didn’t stay out too late because I had early-morning plans that involved a walk on the High Line. I hadn’t been since the summer, and it was lovely on a chilly, sunny morning when it was still quiet out.

The rest of the day was pretty mellow, complete with mimosas, a trip to the Hells Kitchen flea market, and other good weekend-things.

Progress

While I know I’m hardly the only person guilty of this, it drives me crazy sometimes that I tend to order the same thing at certain restaurants. Case in point: whenever I go to a diner, I pretty much always get an egg-white omelet with spinach and feta. Wheat toast.  True, it’s delicious and fairly healthy, but I always roll my eyes at myself for being so predictable.

Yesterday, I met a friend for lunch at the Renaissance Diner in Hells Kitchen—trying to make time for weekday lunch dates with my girls while I still have a flexible schedule! We were both craving eggs, so of course I thought about ordering my old stand-by. But I didn’t! Instead, I ordered an egg-white vegetable frittata…So okay, maybe it’s almost the exact same thing, but this had mushrooms and tomatoes and broccoli. And it was amazing. I’m a little obsessed with mushrooms right now. Progress.

Pardon the abundance of “what I ate”-type posts lately. I’ve been trying to squeeze in as much bill-paying work as I can while I still have control over my schedule. A lot of people have been asking me how I’m going to handle freelancing once I start my internship, and to be honest, I haven’t totally figured that out yet. I have a few plans in place to help keep me sane, but I know it’s going to be a bit of a balancing act, at least in the beginning.

Still, I’m excited. I’ve been working toward this since 2009, and within a year, I’ll be just about ready to add MS, RD to my business card. Even if the next year is going to be nuts, I know I’m going to learn so much and, because I can never seem to help it, end up with a lot of stories to tell.

Do you tend to order the same thing at restaurants? How do you stay sane when your schedule is crazy?

Obligatory Valentine’s Day Chocolate Post

Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of the amped-up expectations and “how much is enough/too much” anxiety that often come with over- hyped, couple-y holidays like Valentines Day—New Years Eve is  another least favorite. Perhaps it’s just my textbook Sagittarius-ness talking, but I’d rather be surprised with a romantic outing or flowers on some random day in, like, March, rather than a 4-dollar Hallmark card on February 14th.

When you’re in a relationship, it seems silly to pick one arbitrary February day to do nice things for each other. Besides, nothing kills the mood like “Well, I guess it is Valentines Day…” Though I’ve read and written about aphrodisiac foods, I don’t really believe in the magic of oysters. And for those of us single and single-ish gals out there, I especially don’t buy into the implication that eating chocolate, sending ourselves flowers or enjoying other things we can do for ourselves anytime we like somehow connote failure. When it comes to certain things in life (though true, not all), if you want it done right, you’re better off doing it yourself.

Which brings me back to chocolate. Sure, a heart-shaped gift box from the drugstore is nice, but there’s something to be said for meeting your own needs and figuring out what you like. One of my favorite recent finds is Trader Joe’s dark chocolate with caramel and black sea salt. I also love Ghirardelli’s Intense Dark. As a dark chocolate lover, I don’t know if I’d be able to hide my disappointment upon being presented with a last-minute gift of waxy milk or white chocolate. Worse would be something with almonds in it. “Aww, thanks so much. Just a sec, let me get my epi pen so I can try one…” Hot. Of course, as with many things in life, it also works to have a partner who knows what you like.

Though chocolate is often considered a guilt-inducing food, there are plenty of well-established reasons that enjoying a little bit (especially dark chocolate, which has a higher cocoa content) within your daily calorie limits may actually benefit your health, thanks to the flavonoids in cocoa. Some studies suggest up to one ounce a day to put you in the sweet spot without overdoing it. Studies show chocolate may:

When you consider that cocoa is a rich source of magnesium and that it also plays a role in the regulation of mood-affecting neurotransmitters, it makes sense that many women crave it during “that time of the month.” While you can get it from eating a few squares of the good stuff, cocoa powder (if only slightly or not alkalized, as alkalization can impact antioxidant levels) is one of the easiest ways to get your fix. Some of my favorite ways to incorporate it are:

  • In oatmeal (I stir in a tablespoon during cooking)
  • In yogurt
  • In smoothies
  • In homemade hot cocoa, made with milk and a little sweetener
  • In chili
  • In pancake batter

Of course, I also love cocoa in chocolate desserts. A few bites of something really decadent can be a great way to end a meal. This year, I’m spending Valentine’s Day with a few lady friends. Wine and chocolate will definitely be involved, though that’s pretty much how it goes any time we get together.

Are you a chocolate lover? What’s your favorite kind? Do you add cocoa powder to certain foods?

Why does this exist?

While grocery shopping on Sunday, I found something else to add to the list of “Ew, why does this exist?”

To quote my sister, “Because who would want to eat a cherry that actually tastes like a cherry?” Duh. Silly me.

What’s the weirdest food product you’ve seen lately?

Six Things for Sunday

Happy Sunday. Hope everyone’s had a lovely weekend. I’ve enjoyed a good mix of work and play…

1.) Breaking in new boots that already feel like you’ve had them for ages. When my feet are happy, I’m happy.

2.) Cocktails in speakeasy-esque bars. Sometimes it’s fun to step outside the wine & beer box—or okay, bottle, because we all know I’d never drink wine from a box, right? If you knew me before, say, 2005, please don’t answer that question.

3.) Weird-But-Good Food Combinations

After a workout, it’s amazing, the things you find yourself craving. For whatever reason, a warm bowl of spinach, roasted veggies, and homemade falafel sounded like the perfect lunch on Saturday—topped with hummus and goat cheese, of course. On the side? Roasted sweet potato rounds. I will definitely be re-creating this weirdness in the near future.

4.) Speaking of working out, is there anything better than taking a long shower afterwards and then putting your pajamas back on? I spent the better part of Saturday afternoon in my favorite old slip.

5.) Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate with Caramel and Black Sea Salt.

Enough said.

6.) This Tumblr. It’s like Pinterest, only better.

What are your “things” for Sunday?

On Vegetarianism and Doing it Wrong

In the spirit of Valentines Day-inspired dating stories that mention food, this was originally going to be an anecdotal post about what I learned dating a vegetarian—something clippy and cute but with a cautionary edge to it. I was also going to show you this picture as an illustration of how you know you’re doing it wrong…

Then I realized that what I had to say about the topic was a little, well, dark, and not so cute.

Though I wasn’t ready to admit it when that photo was taken almost two years ago, I can say now that my mysterious yoga injury was somewhat related to some vitamin deficiencies I dealt with while attempting to adopt my then-boyfriend’s vegetarian lifestyle. All I should really say about that is that some people who swear they don’t expect you to change may still act in ways that make you feel judged. The other side of the coin is that out of a desire to make our partner happy—or at least to keep the peace—too many of us, I think, try to change ourselves before checking in with our common sense about whether someone’s expectations for us are unrealistic.

Though I ended up learning a lot about how to do vegetarianism right, I did a lot wrong in the beginning. And things got a little worse before they got better. While I’d still encourage pretty much anyone to enjoy a plant-based diet, I believe that for some of us, that plant-based diet can also include small amounts of meat, fish and dairy. I happen to be one of those people—I’m strong and healthy, and all my labs are normal now. There’s also a lot to be said for being confident in your choices and not feeling the need to justify them to someone else. Stress and guilt aren’t exactly health-boosters.

What I also realized was that it’s really not an issue that’s exclusive to vegetarianism. This can apply to an omnivore dating a vegetarian or a vegan dating a carnivore—and everything in between.

Food is very personal, and a challenging part of dating is finding someone with whom your style of eating “meshes.” While many of us are secure in  who we are and have no problem just eating the way we eat (whether we’ve always been that way or have learned through experience), it’s never easy dealing with someone who feels routinely compelled to discuss why their way of doing things is superior. Has anyone else noticed that these are often the same people who insist they don’t try to impose their viewpoints upon others?

Granted, there are tons of couples with different eating habits who do just fine, and they can even influence each other in positive ways, but the operative word there is “positive.” It’s never okay to be a bully. The important thing is that if you’re healthy and you (and your doctor) are happy, you’re doing what works for you. Anyone who’s got a problem with that should ask themselves why it matters so damn much and just shut the f*** up.

And ladies, just a few words of advice: if your man makes a habit of scanning your grocery receipts looking for something to wag a finger at or lecture you about, tell him to get lost. It’s not worth fighting over. There’s someone better out there for you, and he won’t get on your case about a container of yogurt or a carton of eggs.

Have you ever dated and/or lived with someone who had different dietary habits than yours? What was it like for you?

Name-Tags and Hairnets

I go through phases where I put cocoa powder in practically everything. This week has been one of those phases—hardly mysterious, but no less ridiculous.

This morning's breakfast: whipped banana oats w/ chia seeds, cocoa, and cottage cheese

I love that the pre-Valentines Day hype always seems to coincide with one of these phases. Granted, with so many chocolate-centric Hallmark holidays, one of them’s bound to be convenient in this respect, especially when you consider that the Easter Candy is already out in some stores, but hey, I’ll take what I can get.

My unofficial Valentines Day gift to myself also came in the mail this week. After putting it off for a few months, I bought myself a new pair of boots, something I can wear around the hospital comfortably but that I’ll also want to wear out. I have a hard time with shoes because of my lovely little foot deformity, so Aerosoles is my friend, especially when they’re having a clearance sale.  I love the way these look and feel, and my orthotics fit! Yeah…I prefer to rely on my charm than my sexy footwear when it comes to making friends.

Later this morning I’m taking a work break to go add to my collection of name-tags and hairnets by getting my dietetic intern ID card. Seriously, my desk drawer is like a graveyard of old personas who look eerily similar.

Do you have an extensive collection of name-tags and hairnets?

Sorry, I can’t turn down an opportunity to quote Wayne’s World

What I Ate Wednesday #44

Another week, another What I Ate Wednesday. As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting the link party. In honor of this month’s “Love your veggies” theme, I’ve got lots of colorful stuff to share. Not that that’s so different from usual, but hey…

As my internship gets closer and closer, I’m realizing that if I don’t take a few days to enjoy my time off, I’ll regret it, so I spent Tuesday catching up on stuff around the house and then going shopping with my sister. It was so gorgeous out (50 degrees and sunny—crazy), it was hard to stay inside! Here’s what I ate between outings…

Breakfast: Steel cut oats w/ chia seeds, plum & peanut butter

blurry breakfast

Lunch: Greens w/ roasted veggies, tempeh, sprouts,  balsamic; toast w/ cottage cheese & nutritional yeast

Snacks: Fruit; lazy person’s hot chocolate (skim milk heated in the microwave + cocoa powder & stevia) topped w/ frothed milk

Dinner: Kabocha red lentil soup (inspired by Mama Pea) w/kale underneath and goat cheese on top; Ezekiel English muffin w/ Trader Joe’s lentil masala dip & smoked garlic spread my aunt made

Snack: unpictured drink (gin + club soda+ lemon & lime juice) at writers’ group; banana
