That’s a wrap

So, I survived Tuesday’s presentation.  I have no idea what kind of grade I got,and honestly, at this point, I don’t even care. I’m just so happy to be done! After a sort of stressful early workday, it was awesome to sit down to a gorgeous lunch prepared by one of the food production classes. So many gorgeous things! I think the theme was Spanish foods? IMG_2369I also loved hearing all my classmates discuss their studies. Yes, it was a long 5 hours, but the feeling of being done and being able to spread congrats around the room was so special.

I’m not going to lie and say that grad school has been a piece of cake—there were a lot of late nights, tears, and freak-outs, though fortunately, most of the latter two occurred in 2009 and 10. I don’t talk about it much on the blog, but early on I had to stand up to a lot of naysaying and bust my ass the whole way to get as much as I could out of the education (and you know, not fail chem) and seek out my own learning experiences to fill in the gaps.

So yeah, I can now put MS, RD on those business cards. I’m a little fried but so appreciative. What a long, strange trip indeed. And it’s just the beginning of another one : )

Presentation Day

So today is the day. I’ve been having anxiety nightmares about this for weeks—this afternoon (3:46, to be exact) I’m presenting my capstone project. I’m trying not to think about the fact that I’ve essentially been working towards this for the past four years, but, well…yeah.

I worked late yesterday and came in to work early today so I can be there for all the presentations (required). In typical Jess fashion, I packed plenty of snacks: IMG_2361

I feel like this photo says a ton about how my eating habits have changed over the past 4 years too! In 2009, I’d have definitely had a few packs of splenda or some kind of artificially-sweetened yogurt, and soy crisps instead of, uh, turkey jerky (awkward name, but hey). There would also have been a giant diet coke involved. Maybe the Gnu bar would have been a Luna Bar. And the sliced green peppers? Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Haha thanks for putting up with some of my delirious posts lately. I see light at the end of the tunnel!

Happy Weekend

Happy Friday, all! I survived my first week at work and am looking forward to a nice weekend. I started off with some chill-time in Central Park. IMG_2328

Any good weekend plans?

Of Late

What a week! I can’t believe it’s already Thursday! It also happens to be plant-watering day around these parts.

I’ve still got at least another week of orientation, but I’m starting to learn my way around a little better. For the first time maybe ever, I’ve been going about organizing my desk—of all the jobs I’ve had (not counting freelance writing work), I’ve never had my own workspace, so it was really weird to be, like, “Wait, I can put my own stuff in the drawers?” So that happened…IMG_2310

I’m a little afraid to know what it says about me that the first thing I brought to put on my desk was a container of Clorox wipes. Oh well.

Another bright spot: I made it through my first wounds round without a supervisor/preceptor and didn’t pass out, so cheers to that.

Because my brain is a little too fried to make good segues, I’ve also been meaning to post about this wine for a while. I’m that person who will buy a bottle of wine and take a month to open it, and then a week to finish/get sick of it. This Tohu sauv blanc came recommended by the owner of a wine shop near me, and I love it. I will definitely be buying this again. IMG_2318

I’m presenting my capstone project at the beginning of next week and then I’m done with grad school forever! Unless I do something crazy like decide I want to go back to school one day. For now, I’m just gonna focus on the “OMG I see light at the end of the tunnel!” in that department.

What are you loving lately?

How to Recharge for Friday Night

IMG_2215

Why use a glass when you can drink your wine from a jar?

Good morning and happy Friday! Anything good on the agenda? I have a yoga date with a friend later and plans to catch up with some other favorite people over the weekend. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep work-time to a minimum.

Coming across this Self blog post about 5 Energizing yoga poses to do before you go out at night made me think of some of my early clinical rotations where the only thing I had energy for on Friday night was laundry. I even stopped lying after a while. I’d just say, “I’m tired and I kind of just want to stay home and write/catch up Mad Men things/faceplant.” To be fair, I was pretty new to the clinical grind, but I eventually found ways to combat the end-of-week exhaustion.

Do you ever find that by the time you get to the end of the week, you’re too wiped out to even think of doing anything festive? While there are definitely times you should stay home and rest (and you probably know better than your social calendar), but sometimes getting out and catching up with friends is the best medicine for that dragging feeling. A few things I’ve found that work for me:

*Exercise—it can be anything from a 15-minute walk around the block, to a quick yoga flow in my apartment, to a Zumba class or cardio session. Endorphins are like a magic drug for tired.

*A nap. Everyone’s different when it comes to naps, but I’ve found that a 20-30 minute cat nap perks me right up. Any longer and I usually wind up more tired, but that doesn’t always stop me from taking the extra 10 or 15 minutes because I can.

*Eat something—Even if I have dinner plans later, I’ll eat a well-balanced snack to keep my blood sugar levels stable so I don’t show up in crash-mode. Yes, I belong to the “never show up to a dinner party starving” club. I make sure I have something with both protein and carbohydrate to keep me going. A few of favorites:

  • Plain Greek yogurt with fruit and/or whole grain cereal
  • Non-fat or part-skim ricotta with fruit and a drizzle of honey
  • Dry-roasted edamame
  • Green smoothie
  • Scrambled or hard-boiled egg on whole wheat toast (scrambeld egg whites is great too)
  • Sliced veggies dipped in hummus
  • A mini Babybel cheese and an apple
  • A small baked sweet potato with goat cheese

*Hydrate—Never underestimate the difference a tall glass of water can make—when our cells are thirsty, it’s harder for them to do their thing, which makes us feel sluggish. Also important if you’re planning to drink alcohol later…

I have a feeling I’ll be relying on some of these tricks quite a bit in the summer months. It’s been nice to have a couple months without a regular schedule, but I’m looking forward to the change. I’m one of those nerdy people who thrives off routine, and I find that I enjoy my off-the-clock time more when I’m more aware of how precious it is. Haha that sounds kind of sappy. Oh well. There are worse things.

Any good weekend plans? How do you re-energize to go out on a Friday?

What I Ate Wednesday # 103

Wednesday snuck up on me, as per usual. Welcome to another What I Ate Wednesday. As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting  the weekly link party. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

Cheers to this being the last WIAW of the month! It seems like March has had way too much fun being a lion, especially weather-wise. Still, the closer we get to April (and May, and June…), the more optimistic I get. This week has been busy so far, but I’ve been staying energized with balanced meals.

Here’s what I ate Monday…Sorry the pictures aren’t so great. It was a crazy day!

Breakfast: Apple spice oats, topped with peanut butter

Lunch: Egg white scramble, sprouted-grain toast with babaganoush; ~1/2 cup frozen berries a couple hours later

Snack: Plain Greek yogurt w/ cereal

Dinner: Baked tilapia, asparagus, sweet potato with tahini; a few squares dark chocolate with ginger

Snack: Sliced banana & blueberries with nonfat ricotta & maple syrup

Springing ahead for real

Technically, anyway. It’s still a tad blustery in NYC, but spring just happened, so cheers to that…I may or may not have wandered into the makeup aisle when I went to stock up on allergy meds yesterday. Nothing like a seasonal impulse buy. I wish my insurance covered pick-me-ups like lip-stain. IMG_1926

These boots are worn the f*** out

Even if the temperatures suck, the lighting situation is definitely improved. I love that it’s so much brighter out. While out running errands, I spied a few budding plants. Signs of life!

The start of a new season seems like a good time to check in with those new years resolutions and see which ones are worth keeping with, which ones to chuck, and which ones to get started on already. It’s also a good time to see if there’s anything you need to focus on that didn’t occur to you in January. Not that January 1st is the only time to make resolutions, but since so many of us do, it’s a good jumping-off point.  Continue reading

Stay-cation

Good morning—happy Monday! How was your weekend? I enjoyed a little stay-cation. It was so nice to unplug and unwind. I’m really bad at relaxing, but after almost 4 years of grad school with a dietetic internship and some crazy studying thrown in there, logic told me that one should totally take a few days off after passing the RD exam.

So I made a deal with myself: every time I felt that I “should” be doing something productive (on a weekend, I know), I would write it down so I could get to it come Monday. I was mostly successful, save for a few work emails and stats homework. Other than that, I did only fun things.

Friday I got a reflexology massage and went to a really fun Zumba class—endorphin overload in the best way possible. My muscles were so sore by the time I went to bed.

Saturday I cleaned, took a few walks, and made use of some giftcards I’d gotten for my birthday. Then I organized my closet. I’m embarrassed to admit I had more than a few items that had been lurking in the mix since 2003. Somehow, “maybe I’ll wear it this summer” turned into ten years. Whoops.

I love that Ann Taylor LOFT actually has a decent petites selection. Tiny ladies are people too!

I also went to a favorite cafe and sat with a glass of wine (first white of the year!) writing in my notebook. I don’t really care if the couple next to me knew that I was taking in every little word and analyzing their conversation. Um, people in their late twenties and early thirties: why do we pretend to own less Ikea furniture than we do? Whomever you’re trying to impress will find out eventually! Case in point: someone who came to my apartment for the first time once said, “Hey, I know this table!” It was actually a good ice-breaker.

No matter your profession, I think it’s really important to just free-write sometimes, whatever the hell pops into your head. It’s a form of meditation for me, but a meditation that is especially enjoyable with a cup of coffee or wine. I used to be afraid to go and have a drink by myself, but it’s really nice once in a while.

Sunday I did yoga and spent more time outside. I also managed to read a whole book. A friend had recently recommended a popular author whose work, for better or worse, bears that “airport best-seller” label, but I was glad I gave it a chance—there’s a reason some writers’ books can get you through a transatlantic flight, no problem. Good, engaging writing that lots of people like is not a crime! I need to remind myself of that every once in a while, lest I wander into lit-snob territory.

I didn’t take a whole lot of food pictures, but I do have to admit, it was so nice to enjoy a simple salad between excursions outside. IMG_1864

Are you good at relaxing? How do you like to unwind? Thoughts on Ikea?

I’m an RD!

IMG_1743It took many cups of green tea and coffee to get here, but I finally took and passed my RD exam this morning! It still hasn’t hit me that I’m a registered dietitian. All I can say is, “Wow.” And then a few incomprehensible mumbles of gratitude.

Keeping the secret from you guys was killing me, but I’m happy to say it was an almost zen experience, Mercury retrograde be damned. I’m glad I can talk about it in the past tense now!

First, a nap. And then…we celebrate :)

Thanks for all your encouragement support along the way and for putting up with my bitching and moaning about studying!

Stuff for the Week

Some weeks are busy, and some weeks are very busy. This week already seems to be falling under the latter category. Rather than worry about cooking each day, I prefer to just make a bunch of stuff when I have a free few hours and mix & match all week.IMG_1801

In my humble opinion, this method is way better than ordering in every night. This may or may not be because the idea of take-out for one usually makes me feel depressed and uncharacteristically lonely (Sagittarius = bachelor sign), but it might also be because this saves me a lot of money. Besides, I’d rather do something healthy my way in the spirit of National Nutrition Month than fork over big NYC bucks for something eaten out of a plastic container. If I’m going to enjoy the extra fat/salt/sugar I’d rather make it a pleasurable experience out with good company.

Do you like to prep food for the week ahead? Thoughts on take-out?
