What I Ate Wednesday #111: Graduation Edition

So wow, it’s my official first post-grad  What I Ate Wednesday. I kind of neer thought I’d be able to write that. Thank you as always to the lovely Jenn of Peas & Crayons for hosting the weekly link part. Take a visit to see more WIAW from other bloggers!

My graduation stay started with a fire in the basement in my building, but ended with lobster and chocolate fondue. So hey.

  • Breakfast: A hurried bowl of Greek yogurt with berries, cereal, and sunbutter
  • Lunch: Giant salad, scrambled egg whites, and toast with avocado
  • Dinner: a few pieces of a delicious sushi roll, (unpictured) oysters, steamed lobster with broccolini and sauteed spinach, fruit dipped in chocolate fondue, sauvignon blanc

What’s your ultimate celebration meal?

What I Ate Wednesday #110: Mothers’ Day Linner

Happy Wednesday! I’m still recovering from presenting my capstone project last night. It hasn’t really hit me that I’m basically done with grad school, but hey, no complaints! Of course, there’s always time for a little What I Ate Wednesday. Thank you as always to the lovely Jenn of Peas & Crayons for hosting the weekly link part. Take a visit to see more WIAW from other bloggers!

Since this week has been super-busy, here’s What I ate on Mothers’ Day. My mom is ridiculous (and I mean that in the best way possible)—she’s the only person I’ve ever met who wanted to spend her Mothers’ Day cooking for 15 people. Everything was delicious and everyone seemed to have a really nice time. The only problem with afternoon dinners (at least for me) is that I get hungry around my normal dinnertime. It’s rare that I’m able to eat dinner at 3 and make it all the way to bed without my stomach growling. Over time, I’ve learned to just treat the early dinner like it’s a late lunch. Whatever works, you know? Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full. Eat again when you get hungry 6 hours later…

  • Breakfast: I’m still on a breakfast jag. You’re probably seeing me post zucchini bread oatmeal on Wednesdays, but I eat it at least 3 or 4 times a week right now.
  • Appetizers: Veggies with salsa & spinach dip, tomato & mozzarella
  • Linner: Shrimp, ribs, salad (mixed greens and also this lovely pickled beet salad my mom made), asparagus, potato & cheese pierogi; a glass-and-a-half of my favorite sparkling shiraz
  • Dessert: Vanilla ice cream with strawberries
  • Second Dinner: (unpictured) A salad using up a bunch of leftover veggies; toast with hummus & eggplant

Do you ever need to a eat a “second dinner” after family gatherings?

What I Ate Wednesday #109: First Day

Happy Wednesday! I’m in the middle of my first week at a new job and my eyes are a little glazed over from all the new information I’m taking in, but I wasn’t going to forget this week’s WIAW festivities. I’m linking up to the weekly blog party, hosted by the lovely Jenn of Peas & Crayons. Take a visit to see more WIAW from other bloggers!

Monday began early, with this awesome coconut water—the raw stuff really is good!  It got me through a good nerve-calmign workout until breakfast, which was made-ahead zucchini bread oatmeal.

First off, I just need to comment on the hilariousness of my new ID photo—because I got some color on Sunday, which was spent mostly outside, I look kind of like a weirdly happy Hay Fever Barbie. At least it’s an improvement over my last ID, where I looked like an underaged mail order bride.

One of the perks of my new job is free lunch and breakfast, but this salad, while enough to keep me form gnawing my arm off, was a reminder to get back in the habit of packing snacks. At least now I have a desk instead of lab coat pockets for storage! Small pleasures…

I was about ready to pass out from hunger when I got home, though, so I threw together a quick green smoothie. Dinner happened a few hours later. My brain was so fried, I totally forgot I’d had salad for lunch and threw together another (much more satisfying, avocado-graced) one to go with soup and toast from the freezer. So glam. Before passing the F out for the night, I had some soy milk and graham crackers. For whatever reason, I’ve been digging soy milk again—the unsweetened kind especially. There’s something about that chalky taste I actually really like.

What do you make for dinner when your brain is fried? What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently? Do you like soy milk?

What I Ate Wednesday #108: Messes in Bowls

Good morning and Happy Wednesday! Not only is it WIAW, it also happens to be the first day of a new month! And it’s not just any month—for me, this happens to be the Month of Big-Ass Changes. Between a new job and finishing grad school (after 4 years!), I can’t even pretend that May isn’t a big deal.

Big changes or no, a girl’s still got to eat, so once again, I’m linking up to the weekly blog party, hosted by the lovely Jenn of Peas & Crayons. Take a visit to see more WIAW from other bloggers!

Enjoying my last week of fake vacation has had me out and about quite a lot—making and photographing pretty meals hasn’t exactly been a priority. I’ve been more concerned with keeping my energy up to enjoy the fun. Monday was basically a day of messes in bowls. My first meal of the day was uncharacteristically late—well past noon—so let’s just say it started with a luxurious brunch. Ignore the fact that it was eaten computer-side as I checked work emails…Please pardon the horrendous photo quality. Like I said, priorities…

  • “Brunch”: Savory oatmeal with lots of veggies, nutritional yeast, egg whites, avocado, and a lot of hummus.
  • Snack: Plain Greek yogurt with cereal, blackberries, and sunflower seed butter.
  • Dinner: Post-yoga dinner with a lady friend at Jivamutki—I had the “yogi’s choice” with grilled tempeh, steamed veggies, quinoa, and turmeric tahini dressing. The food was okay, but the company was lovely.
  • Snack: (unpictured) sliced banana with PB2

Any enjoyable messes in bowls recently?

What I Ate Wednesday #107: Sunday Funday

Yikes. I just said “Sunday Funday.” Who am I? Someone who occasionally uses “Sunday Funday” as a blog post title, I suppose. Anyway, though I’ve been tying up a lot of loose ends and getting ready for some big changes that come with a new schedule, I’ve been trying to make the most of my last few weeks being able to set my own hours and declare weeknights honorary Saturdays.

Obviously, by now it is Wednesday again… and time for another What I Ate Wednesday.  As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

Last Sunday was one of those “clean out the fridge” and get stuff done days. I put in a lot of work during the daytime so I could go see a late movie. Was anyone else not really scared by The Shining? I don’t know how I’d gone so long without seeing it, but I’m glad I finally got to cross that off the list. It was also nice to be able to go out for a bite after the film instead of going right home. Sure, I was tired the next day because my crazy morning people genes woke me up bright & early despite an eye mask, but hey.

  • Breakfast: Green pancakes
  • Lunch: Giant salad, toast with hummus & eggplant
  • Snack: yogurt with cereal and berries
  • Dinner: hummus, goat cheese, & veggie quesadilla, more salad( need to use up those greens)
  • Snack/2nd Dinner: (unpictured) Vegetable dumpling soup at 1 a.m.—why not?

What was the last movie you saw in theaters? Last late-night bite?

What I Ate Wednesday #106

Wednesday comes quickly, no? Hope you’re having a good week so far. Mine has been busy, but good-busy.  Lots of things going on—I’ll share more details later.  So let’s do this What I Ate Wednesday thing, shall we? As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

Monday was something of a roller coaster, and more about food as fuel than anything. Sorry if my photos are a little blurry—I feel like I barely stopped moving all day.

  • Breakfast: Oats w/ flax, plum & blueberries, topped w/ sunflower seed butter
  • Lunch: Salad and toast with smoked salmon and avocado, a piece of dark-chocolate-covered ginger
  • Snack: Plain Greek yogurt with berries, cereal, and fig & ginger preserves
  • Dinner: This stir-fry—a recent favorite; a square of dark chocolate (yep, more chocolate)
  • Snack: (unpictured) sliced banana w/ PB2

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently?

What I Ate Wednesday #105: Food Photo “Rules”

Good morning and happy Wednesday! This week is going crazy-fast for me, but I’ve been enjoying the nice weather we’re finally having here in the northeast, even if it’s going back into the 50′s later this week. So let’s do this What I Ate Wednesday thing, shall we? As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

So far this week, I haven’t been photographing much, mostly because I’ve either been too busy to remember or not in the mood to interrupt a conversation with an iPhone camera or because I’ve been with people who don’t really know about the blog. I don’t like to be “that girl who takes pictures of all her food,” you know?  I’m curious—do any of you bloggers out there have any particular rules about food photos when you’re with others?

Though I’m exaggerating when I liken having a food blog to having kids or a dog, you do have to say at point, “Hey, I have this thing that’s part of my life, and I need to do things for it—are you cool being around that sometimes?”  Or like, “Hey, I need to go walk my blog—want to come with?”

It’s more than just being seen as “weird,” though. For example, what if someone reads into an implied intimacy because you show off a meal you enjoyed with them online? It’s a very subtle but powerful signal we bloggers use, often without even realizing it. Since the nature of sharing meals is an intimate act in and of itself (think way back to caveman days—you didn’t share your fire or meat with your enemies), posting those things for the world to see is a way of saying, “Look at these intimate things we’re doing together.” Even if the dining company isn’t fully conscious of this, it definitely alters the dynamic. It’s somewhat akin to saying, “Do you want to come back to my place?”

I’ve had to teach myself to really tune in to my gut feeling about someone before I whip out my phone or camera. I’ve also noticed that my desire to share photos of meals I enjoy with someone—or lack there of–says a lot about my feelings for that person. I actually once realized I needed to stop seeing someone because I was terrified that if I posted about meals I’d had with them, they’d start acting like they “owned” me. On the flip side, I’ve gone out with people (though very, very few) with whom I’ve had to keep myself from taking a photo on the first date.

Haha anyway, I’m just rambling. Whether it’s new friends, new more-than-friends, or new co-workers, I often wonder how best to approach it once I’ve gotten comfortable enough to do so. I find What I Ate Wednesday is actually the easiest ice-breaker because I can just explain, “Yeah, I do this fun weekly link-up…so that’s why I’m photographing my lunch tray/cocktail/dinner.”

Speaking of What I Ate Wednesday, let’s get to the what-I-ate part. Here’s what I enjoyed on Sunday.

  • Breakfast: Apple-spice oats with sunflower butter & bee pollen.
  • Lunch: Poached eggs with avocado, mushrooms, and tomato, English muffin on the side
  • Snack: (unpictured) Hummus, crackers, and olives during a wine-tasting
  • Dinner: Steak with mango-cilantro salsa; side salad
  • Snack: (unpictured) seaweed, cucumber salad

So I’m curious—do you have any food photo “rules?” What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently?

What I Ate Wednesday #104: 2 Year Anniversary

This post marks my 2-year WIAW Anniversary! Um, wow. Time…Crazy thing. It’s nuts to me that it’s been 104 weeks since I joined this weekly link party, and man, has the time flown. As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

Let’s play one of my favorite games!

Man, 2010′s photos make me really glad I finally got into the habit of, like, doing my hair. Anyway. For this big-deal edition, I thought I’d share with you what I ate on Easter Sunday.

Breakfast: Plain Greek yogurt with chia seeds and fruit salad

Snack: Hummus with sliced pepper & baby carrots, a piece of dark chocolate-covered ginger

Appetizers: Blinis with caviar, smoked salmon, a slice of keilbasa, raw veggies; lambrusco to drink

Dinner: Baby kale salad, asparagus, ham, lamb, a slice of babka, a potato & cheese pierogi, and stuffed cabbage. I didn’t finish everything here, but I enjoyed every bite

Dessert: A chocolate-chocolate chip cookie with peppermint glaze—just as delicious at Easter as at Christmas

Snack (unpictured) A sliced banana with nonfat ricotta between studying and folding laundry when I got home later

What are some of your favorite holiday foods?

What I Ate Wednesday # 103

Wednesday snuck up on me, as per usual. Welcome to another What I Ate Wednesday. As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting  the weekly link party. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

Cheers to this being the last WIAW of the month! It seems like March has had way too much fun being a lion, especially weather-wise. Still, the closer we get to April (and May, and June…), the more optimistic I get. This week has been busy so far, but I’ve been staying energized with balanced meals.

Here’s what I ate Monday…Sorry the pictures aren’t so great. It was a crazy day!

Breakfast: Apple spice oats, topped with peanut butter

Lunch: Egg white scramble, sprouted-grain toast with babaganoush; ~1/2 cup frozen berries a couple hours later

Snack: Plain Greek yogurt w/ cereal

Dinner: Baked tilapia, asparagus, sweet potato with tahini; a few squares dark chocolate with ginger

Snack: Sliced banana & blueberries with nonfat ricotta & maple syrup

What I Ate Wednesday #102

…and suddenly it’s Wednesday again—aka What I Ate Wednesday. As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting  the weekly link party. To see more WIAW from other bloggers, visit Peas & Crayons.

In keeping with this month’s green theme, this post contains a lot of chlorophyl. I’m still trying to make mostly things to use up random canned goods & such, but Sunday I had plans with my mom, which was really nice.

WHOA-OH OH—I just remembered that today is the spring equinox. I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for spring weather to freaking get here already. I’m getting to that breaking point where I listen way too much to the Postal Service for my own good (especially this “new” song I just heard for the first time last weekend) and make big little life decisions in between headaches. I’m sure there’s a planetary scapegoat I could pin this on, but I think I’ll just stick with a lingering case of the winter-blahs. These dim photos are bumming me out.

Breakfast: Chocolate oatmeal with egg whites (and canned pumpkin mixed in), topped with the other half of the banana I used to cook the oats.

Lunch: Grilled branzino with broccolini, roasted potatoes, and brussels sprouts; an unpictured glass of champagne that came with my “brunch.” Weird pairing, but hey, why not?

Snack: (unpictured) post-workout cottage cheese with blueberries and a crumbled graham cracker

Dinner: Salad with leftover roasted eggplant & pepper, chickpeas, and feta; olive foccacia from the flea market.

Snack: Sliced apple with dip/fluff made from PB2, cocoa powder, and more pumpkin—no way to make it sound good, but it tasted great with the tart apple.

Here’s to better & brighter—Happy Spring!

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently? What are you looking forward to this spring?
