Ruts and Routines

Happy Monday! Did you have a good weekend? I’m up bright and early to head to week two of my current rotation. I’m not gonna lie, the 3-hour roundtrip commute is not really doing it for me, but at least I got a lot of sleep over the weekend-and least this is the only rotation like this.

As someone who thrives off routine, it’s challenging to have to rethink and rearrange every three weeks. Though this internship is meant to be a clinical learning experience, learning flexibility (for me, anyway) is turning out to be just as important. Frustrating as it can be, I think it’s good for me to have to step outside my comfort zone on a regular basis and find ways to make it work.

For example, since I have to leave my apartment in time to make a 7:30 shuttle on the other side of town, I had to turn my morning routine on its head. I’m used to getting up, working out, showering, getting dressed and then eating breakfast right before running out the door. Instead, I’ve been showering and doing my hair at night and packing breakfast to eat when we finally get to the campus around 8:15 or so. Exercise last week consisted of a lot of walking and living room yoga. Whatever works. I might try a few different things this week, just to see what happens.

The yogurt-based overnight oats have been helpful, but I won’t lie, I was happy to have hot oats over the weekend. I even tried something new—leftover steamed kabocha cooked in. Try it, it’s delicious! Just chop it up and cook it in with whatever else you’re throwing in. It was a great way to get out of a rut.

Wow-all kinds of details you probably don’t really care about. Thanks for letting me ramble a little!

What’s your commute like? Do you get attached to your routine or do you mix things up a lot? Any tips?

Off the radar

Saturday morning-Oats in a PB jar. Hell yes.

I kind of fell off the radar this weekend. During the week, I got hit with a killer sinus thing that gave me a hardcore toothache, earache, and twitchy eye. There was a lot of sleeping, but there was also some reading, walking, napping, and yoga-ing (aka sweating with strangers).

In other news, I managed to make an omelet and not totally f**k it up. This is some kind of personal breakthrough.

Sure, I had a little work to do, but I also took myself out to a cute little wine bar on Sunday afternoon for a glass of red and some time with my notebook. It’s all about the small pleasures, you know?

Fingers crossed for a clear-headed week!

What was the best part of your weekend? Looking forward to anything in particular this week?

Why Sleep Is Important

All this “I’m so tired, I can’t sleep” business has me humming Sarah McLachlan in my head this week. That is, when I’m not accidentally putting my foot in my mouth. I’ve had a few shining moments—by which I mean hilariously close calls.

I never mean to say stupid things, but when anxious or put on the spot, I often blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.  I swear, sometimes I feel like every day is another adventure in “Oh no she di’int!”

Dear Jess:
Sometimes a nod-and-smile is sufficient.

It seems my appropriateness filter runs on adequate sleep. Anyone else have that problem?

Here are some other reasons sleep is important…

After a Sunday that involved this… …and some of this…  I’m  up early and off to start my next rotation at a site outside the city. I may or may not be a sleepy zombie for the next 3 weeks. … Continue reading

What I Really Ate Wednesday

You can tell it’s a busy week when I rely on picture posts. Since I usually show you Monday or Tuesday for What I Ate Wednesday, I figured I’d show you what this actual Wednesday looked like.

The interns had our monthly “class day” this Wednesday, which meant morning lectures and a free afternoon. I’d like to say I got a lot of work done, but really, I caught up on laundry and went for a massage. It was exactly what I needed to do. Since I wasn’t at the hospital all day, I actually had time to be a little more creative in my use of leftovers…

Breakfast: I packed some yogurt-based overnight oats to eat during the first class

Lunch: Leftover curried red lentil kabocha soup with veggies and goat cheese; toast with avocado and roasted pepper

Snack: Green smoothie with cereal

Dinner: Grits with veggies, tofu and bacon (why not put tofu and bacon in the same bowl?), topped with miso tahini dressing; side salad

Snack: Apple with PB2/chocolate sauce

As much as I’ve been loving my current rotation, the break in the routine was welcome. I feel like I got a chance to hit the “reset” button—and just in time. Back to the life. Have a great day!

Do you ever pair bacon with stereotypical vegetarian fare?

Worlds Collide

I had to laugh yesterday afternoon, when I glanced at my desk. I was enjoying a post-work green smoothie while waiting to throw some laundry in the dryer. Next to the bowl (which was resting nicely on top of my behavioral health nutrition homework) was my copy of Frank O’Hara’s Lunch Poems. It was almost too appropriate, given the title, but at the same time, the “world’s colliding” factor amused me.

While helping others feel good by eating well is one of my main passions, I practically came out of the womb with a pen in hand. Writing has always been my “thing,” what makes me feel happiest and most at peace, and I love that I get to write about nutrition and health as part of my job.

April happens to be National Poetry Month, and I’ve been having a great time attempting to keep up with the “30 poems in 30 days” challenge—I actually kind of like having a long subway commute because it gives me time to put pen to paper and see what happens.

What are some of the things you’re passionate about?

Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Food as medicine

Okay, so this post has nothing to do with the 2007 Spoon album, but I’m having one of those weeks where by the end of the day, the only language I’m capable of comes out all Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Holy crap. I booked myself a massage for next week (something to look forward to—hah, more Spoon), packed a nice lunch for today, and am looking forward to a good weekend with family and friends.

The calendar tells me it’s getting to be that time again…No wonder I’m in a murderous state, if exhausted. Thank god Easter usually involves lots of chocolate! I’m need of a fix. Or many.

What are you looking forward to right now?

What I Ate Wednesday #52

So wow—it seems I’ve been doing this What I Ate Wednesday thing for a whole year! That happened fast. So much has changed…This time last year, I didn’t know where (or if) I’d be doing a dietetic internship, and now I’m in the second week of my second rotation. Crazy!

This week got off to a great, running start. The hours just flew by. I have to admit,  it was nice to come home and catch up on Sunday night’s Mad Men while I did work. I want to give a Happy Birthday shout-out to my friend Alex, who made this whole TV thing possible : )

Here’s the “what I ate” part of Monday…

Breakfast: steel-cut oats with pear, dried apricot, flax & chia seeds and cottage cheese, topped w/ PB2 sauce

Lunch: Salad bar creation—I got there in time for the hard-boiled eggs for a change. Big whoop, I know…

Snacks: (Unpictured) grapes, crackers throughout the day; small glass of skim milk when I got home

Dinner: Leftover lentil soup w/ veggies; sweet potato w/ goat cheese

Snack: Plain yogurt with a chopped up frozen Fig Newton and berries (got the idea for the frozen Fig Newtons from Allie

What’s your favorite healthy breakfast?

Last night, I dreamed mostly in Spanish. No big deal for some folks, but I don’t speak a lick of Spanish. I can follow a little, but that’s about it. However, in the past few weeks, I’ve had to get comfortable working with an interpreter or using a telephone interpreter service to communicate with patients who don’t speak English.

I’m starting to remember little things, but let’s not kid ourselves—I couldn’t go to Madrid and expect to get by asking people on the street if they can tell me what a carbohydrate is or whether protein raises their blood sugar or what time to take which insulin. “Show me how to get the air out of the needle” would only get me into trouble.

Educating patients on carbohydrate counting and giving examples of healthy meals has also put me in touch with the fact that what a healthy meal looks like varies across cultures. A recent article in Today’s Dietitian looked at the best breakfast options from around the globe, sizing up typical morning meals from countries such as Turkey, Israel, Costa Rica, China, Vietnam, and Venezuela. The article also includes recipes for arepas and queso blanco.

Those of you who’ve been following me a while know I’m a big fan of oatmeal for breakfast, though the summer months find me craving smoothies and yogurt bowls in the morning. It may be cold as balls in NYC today, but the warmer temps are coming…

After School Snacks

A kale smoothie with a side of coal...

Do you remember what kinds of after-school snacks you used to eat when you were a kid? Weirdly enough, I can’t, though I have vague memories of cereal in the afternoon, and I did go through a phase in high school where I often craved tomato soup when I got home. Oatmeal with banana was another thing I reached for a lot.

Some days when I get home from the hospital, I’m ready to start thinking of dinner, but more often, I need a little something to get me through email checking or an “Oh! It’s actually nice out!” walk around the block.

I’m glad the weather is starting to warm up—smoothies are back in a big way. I have dinner plans with a girlfriend tonight, so to avoid a low-blood sugar meltdown, I whipped up an ugly-but-good shake with:

  • 1 big handful kale
  • ~3/4 c skim milk
  • half a frozen banana
  • a handful of ice.

That should just about get me from point A to point B. Let the inbox-cleaning begin…
